Evaluating Filipino Nurses for Medical Transcription Support

Originally published 22 August 2018. Restored and revised 19 October 2026 from our archived article, with updated guidance and clearer responsibilities.

A nursing background can be relevant to medical transcription because the work involves clinical terminology and careful documentation. It does not, by itself, prove transcription accuracy or readiness for your specialty. Assess each candidate’s experience and practical work against the standards your practice uses.

Test the skills the role actually needs

Use a suitable sample that reflects your terminology, audio quality, formatting, and turnaround expectations without exposing patient information during recruitment. Review listening comprehension, spelling, document structure, and how the candidate handles unclear dictation. Speed is useful only when the output meets your quality requirements.

Require a clear process for uncertainty

A transcriptionist should flag inaudible words, conflicting information, and unfamiliar abbreviations instead of guessing. Define how the reviewer receives those questions and when work should be returned for clarification. The clinician remains responsible for clinical interpretation and final approval of the record.

Train for your systems and templates

Even an experienced person needs orientation to your document templates, naming conventions, approved abbreviations, and software. Begin with reviewed work and provide specific feedback. Keep guidance accessible so that revisions do not depend on someone remembering a verbal instruction.

Assess quality over time

Agree how you will sample work, classify errors, and check corrections. Review recurring issues and turnaround together. Avoid blanket claims about nationality, typing speed, or perfect accuracy; the relevant evidence is the individual’s work and the support process around it.
